Abstract Animation and ZED Update
August 23, 2009
Sometimes, I forget how much I love doing abstract art. My upcoming animated project, Fixed Fragmented Fluid, a collaboration with composer Barry Guy, will be purely abstract. I'm experimenting with technology and ideas. It's very exciting.
My 2.5 minute short film, Sensology, is now part of this larger work.
With my busy schedule something's gotta give. I'm sad to announce that I will be delaying ZED #10 until next year. The issue is roughed out and it's good - but it's also 32 pages, and it's the concluding issue of the story arc began in issue #1. I want to do a good job with it and in order to do that, I need time which I currently don't have.
I am, however, hoping to do a new chapter of The Saga of Rex in time for Flight Vol. 7.

Update and Time out
August 2, 2009
This year so far has been amazing.
We've made tremendous progress on our videogame, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, and it looks like funding should be in place pretty soon; I recently created a bunch of effects tests and artwork for Pixar's The Bear and the Bow; I just finished designing a cast of characters for Disney; Flight 6 came out last month with a new chapter of the Saga of Rex and I've already started work on the next chapter for Flight 7.
Long time readers of this site might remember that I've been trying to get an ambitious abstract animation project off the ground for quite some time. I've already created over two minutes of finished footage and used it to demonstrate my concepts.
Earlier this year, in collaboration with the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and legendary Jazz composer Barry Guy, we completed an application for an art grant. I’m happy to announce that the grant was approved and the production is a go!
The larger project is now called, Fixed, Fragmented, Fluid, and will be a collaboration between Barry Guy, and myself. It will be a live show with a seven-piece ensemble (including piano virtuoso, Paul Plimley) and a giant screen that will combine abstract animation and jazz music.
The performance will take place on June 25th, 2010 as the opening night performance of the Innovation Series at the Roundhouse Performance Centre on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival.
As you can see, there's a lot of excitment ahead. But before I dive into it, I've decided to take a 2-week vacation to go see my family in Quebec, Canada.
I love my life!
Flight 6
July 25, 2009
Flight 6 came out this week. I haven't seen the book yet but I heard good things about it. Along with a bunch of fantastic comics from some of my favorite artists, it features a 42-page chapter of "The Saga of Rex". You can see a 14-page preview of "Soulmates" here.
The wonderful cover is painted by Kazu Kibuishi.
